Essentials for Biomedical Data Science: Online Short Course

The DS-I Africa consortium will be hosting a short course aimed at providing the essentials of biomedical data science in global health, particularly in an African setting. The course will combine theory and practice, utilising no-code platforms for programming requirements and, where applicable, open-source tools and resources to enhance sustainability and mitigate accessibility challenges. The topics covered will aim to equip participants with data science-related skills. The training will be hands-on and is best suited for those who plan to incorporate data science into their projects. The course is scheduled to run from 04 August to 29 September 2025. DSI-Africa

Course objectives

  1. Biomedical Data Science Essentials: Provide knowledge of the data science life cycle, including ethical considerations and regulatory frameworks
  2. Biomedical Data Processing and Analysis: Provide hands-on skills in biomedical data processing and analysis
  3. Biomedical Data Science Application: Provide knowledge of real-world data science applications to address biomedical problems and healthcare challenges.

The course will involve hands-on tutorials and access to online hosted materials. Access to a computer is required. Each module will require 4-6 hours to complete. Some modules will require online contact time of no more than 2 hours in any given week. A certificate of completion will be issued should requirements be met. The course is a pilot offering and FREE of charge.

Skills in Programming languages e.g. R and Python is NOT required and will NOT be taught in this course
